An Electric Deal
by Ania Zolyniak
Doing good work for the environment is an issue that is frequently talked about, as people and organizations strive to use alternative forms of energy that are more “environment-friendly.” Recently, a new company has risen to fame for its innovative electric vehicle.
Tesla Motors was founded in 2003 by a group of Silicon Valley engineers who set out to prove that electric vehicles could be useful. Tesla vehicles are the first electrical cars on the road. Tesla Motors’ goal is to accelerate the transition to electric mobility with a full range of increasingly affordable electric cars. Tesla vehicles are not only luxurious and fun to drive, but are also environmentally responsible.
There are currently two new Tesla vehicles being manufactured: the Model S and the Model X.
The Model S is the most popular model, mainly because of its sleek body and efficiency. It has an amazing seventeen inch capacitive touch-screen with media, communication, cabin and vehicle controls. It also has melt in door handles and contains eight airbags, providing thorough protection. The vehicle is equipped with keyless entry, a standard definition back-up camera, an anti-theft alarm, and an immobilizer system. Model S is engineered to perform in both hot and cold climates. With a $15,000 down payment, one would have to pay $762 a month with a two year plan. With this deal, energy savings are estimated at $243 a month.
The Model X is a hybrid between a minivan and SUV. The car has fancy falcon doors, which allows easy access to the second and third rows of the car. A unique aspect of the car is its dual electric motors, one for the front wheels and one for the rear wheels, yielding greater accessibility and an all wheel drive capability that Tesla believes is one of a kind. The electric power-train delivers instant torque for confident lane changes, even when occupied by seven passengers. Like the Model S, it features the innovative touch screen. The Model X will be released in 2013.
“I think that the new hybrid electric car is a revolutionizing model, one that hints to the future of automotive innovations and that is also gas efficient,” said Senior Akhil Arora.
Underneath the sleek curves of a Tesla is an aluminum-intensive structure that is strong, rigid, and light-weight. It is unhindered by an internal combustion engine, therefore allowing Tesla to reimage the possibilities under the hood. The key detail and determining factor in a car that runs on electricity is the battery. By switching to Tesla, one can save on electricity. Purchasing a Model S with a 40 kWh battery saves about $245 in gasoline money for a regular vehicle. The speed attained by the batteries in Tesla vehicles is immense: 40 kWh batteries can accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hours in as little as six seconds. To charge the battery in a Tesla model, a 240 volt outlet is used taking about nine and a half hours for a full charge that lasts for 300miles.
Periscilla Vascones, the manager at the new Tesla Shop in Roosevelt Field Shopping Center in Garden City said, “I feel like I’m part of a great company. It’s such a pleasure making customers smile and making buying a car a different experience. We all work as a team and we all believe in what we are doing,” said Vascone.
