Getting into High G.E.A.R.

New Hyde Park Memorial has a new club to offer this year. G.E.A.R. is a reading club that stands for “Get Excited About Reading.” The members of G.E.A.R. read in a group, and discuss the books that they read.
G.E.A.R. is an opportunity for students to read freely on what interests them. President of G.E.A.R. and Sophomore Armaan Shah said, “The club is a place where students at New Hyde Park Memorial High School can gather and share their passion for reading. It’s like you and your friends are on a mission, a friendly one, and its goal is to understand the books from many different points of view ” said club president Armaan Shah.
“Reading gives general knowledge and teaches new words that the reader could learn,” said sophomore Joel Jacob. Most responded similarly, stating that they believe it will help them concentrate in and out of school. The teachers also believed that it would help students perform better in school.
According to Mrs. Brusca, the club advisor, “This club will encourage students to read more and will help them perform better in their classes.” Some felt that it would make no difference, while others thought it would definitely help students perform better in their classes. Mrs. Brusca really believes that everyone can read books that interest them, and express their opinions on it freely with others. Books teach lessons and that message is better perceived and spread when discussed among a group.
Reading is a pastime that can ease the stress and tension of classes, homework, and other pressures that students face. The club also has some fun events planned for the school year. One event that G.E.A.R. is planning is a Halloween event. According to Mrs. Brusca, the club is planning to have a reading session at the Halloween celebration.
Most students believe that the club is not only about reading, but also about discussing the books students read and getting a different perspective. It is similar to students’ English classes. On the contrary, the discussions are different in that it does not place pressure on any student. It allows the students to be more open about how they feel about the books.
However, there are some students who refuse to join the club, believing that it is “uncool.” “You get the occasional bystander who thinks reading is lame, and will make the people joining this club think twice before they do. But this is all irrelevant if you have a genuine passion or even the smallest interest in our club or reading in general” said Armaan.
The G.E.A.R. club is a step forward in our school. It provides students with the opportunity to actively pursue reading in an encouraging environment that fosters discussion and thought. It allows students to see literature through a new perspective, and allows students to interact with the text. The G.E.A.R. club is a new way for students to experience firsthand the “joy of reading.”
