No Taxation Without Assassination
by Aakash Japi and Nithin Sunilkumar
Assassin’s Creed 3 gives an inside look at an iconic time in our history: the American Revolution. It brings the hard-nosed idealism of the Founding Fathers to life, while shedding light upon the darker aspects of our foundation. Assassin’s Creed 3 allows the player to take part in key events in the Revolution; such as the Boston Tea Party, and allows the player to explore authentic 1770’s versions of New York City and Boston.
Ubisoft also emphasizes the “Frontier”, the untamed expanse that bridges pre-industrial America together. Assassin’s Creed 3 will create a world stretching from New York to Boston that rivals the fabled Elder Scrolls series in size, but will ensure that the environment remains player-friendly and accessible.
This installment adds breathtaking open world locations, from lush forests to fortified military camps. In the wilderness of such expansive locations, Connor will be able to climb and stealthily conceal himself in trees to ambush enemies. New environments, such as dense forests, introduce a hunting system in which animals can be hunted and sold for their resources. In certain areas, Connor is even able to purchase property. These amazing new features allow Connor to become fully immersed in the setting and time period.
Along with newer weapons, the graphics of the game have dramatically improved; as a new engine allows larger areas and many more enemies one screen at a time, allowing for large-scale battles that have yet to be seen in the series. The new Anvil Engine gives Ubisoft the ability to fully recreate the revolution, without downsizing, and fully immersing the player within the universe. The graphics and the Anvil engine give the player a hands-on experience with the American Revolution with realism and vitality.
To tie the breathtaking environment and the inspiring setting together, Assassin’s Creed 3 introduces a new protagonist: Connor. Connor (or in the Native American tongue, Ratohnhaké:ton) is introduced as a character without allegiance. He was born to a British father and a Native American mother, but his father abandoned him and his mother was killed when colonists attacked. Connor joined the assassins out of spite, but grew into a man who fought for justice and liberty. Although Connor plays a major role in the Revolution, he is actually fighting against the Templars, a group of usurpers attempting to seize power over the human race. This way, he remains an unpartisan observer of the conflict and is able to illuminate the moral grays of America’s founding. Connor hasn’t sworn any oath of fealty to the newly founded America: he only fights for justice and truth.
